Symbols of power and authority

This map shows the people who owned one or more horses according to the 1742 Personele Quotisatie (PQ). All households in Amsterdam with an annual income of more than 600 guilders were taxed, which is roughly a quarter of the city’s inhabitants.

The historic map tile in the background is from 1724 by Gerrit de Broen, and digitally made available by Amsterdam Time Machine. The PQ entities were geocoded by converting the 18th century location to a modern address through the conversion file available at the Amsterdam City Archives. This led to extraction of 14326 successful geographic locations, of which only horse owners are shown here. The heat map gives an insight in the density of observations.
